Advent 5421

Postby benny » Wed Dec 10, 2008 3:57 am

Well I recently bought the advent 5421. Got it cheap so thought what the hell even after all my other advent laptops end up broke.

Anyways I cant seem to find any real details on this laptop e.g like whats the max ram it can take, if there are any ram slots under the keyboard and not just the 1 ram slot at the back. motherboard type etc

Any suggestions?

thanks

I was going to point you at this
Code: Select all
http://support.thetechguys.com/layout.aspx?ID={f97fce86-d7d4-4778-9f0b-bb956980e0d4}&CatID={cff92421-3f0b-4dd2-ac60-853c71ab1a2f}

but there appears to be a coding error on the page at the moment...

Often a program like CPU-Z will give you enough information to identify what it really is, as well as the model numbers etc on the underneath of the chassis.

This tells me that the motherboard is dixonsxp? not rly helpfull. Also there is 2 memory slots it says but im not 2 sure where the second one is or even if there is 2 because trying to get the keyboard off is allot harder than my previous advents so ive not managed to get it off just incase i break it.

Also the site link you provided I had actually been there before when it was working. but the advent 5421 that they showed was different from mine.

Any suggestions? also emmm what is the maximum size of memory that my laptop can handle? Could it and is there a 2gb ram module i could buy?

The TechGuys 5421 support page won't tell you. Unfortunately the Advent support is a token gesture and nothing like the support available from Dell, Toshiba, Acer etc.
The 5421 manufacturer may be ECS/Uniwill and they frequently put the second slot under the keyboard. There is probably a retaining screw under/inside the laptop and a series of clips/latches around the keyboard which need to be pushed in to release it.

Try downloading cpu-z.
Run it and click on the SPD tab see how many slots are listed.
Benny's post says
Also there is 2 memory slots it says
but I can't see where he gets that from in the cpu-z report
TBH it looks like ECS are back to the cut price bad old days of the very cheap and often nasty 321and are only fitting one slot on this model :roll:

Ugh the 321. Don't even start me on how yuk it is. The 331 and 335 were a lot better, in the main (though 331 MBs - ewwww).

Hi,

Did anyone manage to find the second memory slot? Crucial are convinced that there is one and I found this post that talks about a slot at the back of the machine:

Thanks.

So can I order a 2GB module? Seems unclear going by this.

It depends on what Uniwill's customer, in this case DSG, have asked for. If DSG have asked for this batch to support 2 gig then yes.

I e-mailed the Tech Guys regarding memory upgrades. They are saying that there is a second slot underneath the keyboard:

"I can confirm that that the second slot is under the keyboard. I have checked the information available on our web site regarding the amount of supported RAM and it indicates that up to 4GB is supported.

http://support.thetechguys.com/layout.aspx?ID={4d232f2e-cd29-4763-b264-030fce5070f3}&CatID={60ad6b5c-ab5f-47a8-b401-8d7a92e61892}

Note, with the 32 bit version of Windows, not all of the 4GB will available."

but for some reason, details on accessing it are being treated like a state secret:

"For upgrades to the memory, I would advise having the memory fitted by your local PC World store. The particular information that you are requested is not available to the general public."

Anyone tried to get under the keyboard on this machine? I think I trust myself more with a screwdriver than the guys in my local store...
