LaCie 500GB £74.99: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115027

Western Digital 500GB £76.99: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/128465

Oh and Hi btw, coincidently I'm looking for 500GB drives at the moment, not sure whether or not to get an internal and put into caddy when I want it on another pc though, will it be faster when its in actual pc rather than usb?

Hi. Just shows you how much drives have come down over the last 4 months since the original post.

Putting the drive in a usb caddy will reduce the speed by up to 7 times against a direct connectiong to SATA 2. There are now SATA caddys that will plug directly into external sata if you have it on your board which will give full speed. They also have a USB connection if needed.

wouldnt touch western digital with a barge pole. earlier this month i was tempted (by price) to get a 500GB WD MyBook on (selling on amazon) for 80 quid. Ended up that it broke within 3 days, making a horrible screeching noise as the disks got chewed up. Rather than crack open the mybook to see what data might be salvaged (disk is encased in hard plastic) i just returned it for a refund. lost 400GB of data :/ read the amazon reviews but dont ignore them like i did

do own a 300GB usb/firewire disk also on amazon but its not failed in 14 months- seagate disk
