Hi,
I have one of these in the workshop right now. The Hard Drive has failed diagnostics so I think it's time for a new one. Do Advent Tattoo their hard drives and motherboards?
Also where do I get a recovery disk for one of these?
Regards,
Neil Harland

Advent is a PCWorld brand name not a computer company.
The Modena notebooks are manufactured by Shuttle and badged Advent.
The owner should have burnt a recovery disc(s) from the Windows Start shortcut. If they didn't and the notebook is bootable it may be possible to do it.
There is a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive which AFAIK is not tattoed but the BIOS DMI string is branded Dixons. The supplied Windows o/s will not install on a non-Dixons motherboard.
Recovery media used to be available from Dixons Stores support The TechGuys which is now called Knowhow. Everthing else relating to Advent notebooks (eg specs, drivers) has disappeared but recovery discs might still be available.
Best of luck.
PS I would suggest you tell the customer to avoid Advent next time.

Hi,
Thanks for the detailed reply. The computer will not reboot, and the customer has not made recovery disks. I have found the following company on the web:

No, sorry, not come across them.
There are other Advent recovery media suppliers out there but £25 seems reasonable. The TechGuys used to charge £35 and some matched that.
Going back to the Dixons support it looks as though they have discontinued supplying the disks but will do a full restore in PCWorld stores for £30 which includes supplying the disks.
