Advent 3216

Postby Gourcuff » Tue Dec 27, 2011 6:42 pm

Just pulled out this machine after scratching my head a few years ago. I'll try provide as much info as possible, if I've missed anything please ask. I want to know what the hell this is as 'Advent' hasn't got support, well it has but it hasn't got an official driver, info site. I'm not after driver as such as driver genius can help with that. I am although after a BIOs update if there is one. Also want to know if the mobo can take powerful RAM (current has 4 slots with 3 256 and 1 512 mb sticks in I think) and a CPU upgrade.

The system fascinates me for some reason, may mod it up a bit but am completely dumbfounded at the moment to what the hell this is, where the info is, BIOs update, what RAM it can take (if it can take more powerful RAM).. a better processor etc..

as always your help is much appreciated.

found a bit info here but need to double check before doing anything...

"Advent" is a brand name of Dixons Stores and there is no Advent computer company as such.
The Advent 3216 was manufactured by Trigem for Dixons (aka Currys, PCWorld).
The motherboard was made for Trigem by Microstar (MSi)

The information available at our good friends UKT answers your question about memory. I'll repeat it here

Motherboard Information MSI MS-6743 ver 1.0 which was a version of the MSi 865GM2 supplied to the OEM market not retail.

Form Factor: 24.5 cm(L) x 24.5 cm(W) ATX Form Factor
CPU Support:
Supports Socket 478 for Intel Pentium 4 processor
FSB 400(Northwood only)/533/800MHz
Supports up 3.0/3.06GHz and higher speed
System Memory:
Supports two 64-bit wide DDR data channels
Available bandwidth up to 3.2GB/s(DDR 400) for single-channel mode and 6.4GB/s(DDR 400) for dual-channel mode
Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 2.5 Volt DDR SDRAM, PC2100/PC2700 /PC3200
Supports up to 4GB memory size without ECC
Chipset: Intel 865G
Supports 800/533/400MHz Intel NetBurst micro-architecture bus
Integrated graphic controller
Supports AGP 8X/4X at 0.8V (AGP 3.0) or 4X at 1.5V (not support 3.3V) interface

There are no BIOS updates available that we are aware of.

Finally, could you please edit your post down to the relevant info. There is a huge amount of irrelevant stuff and it is very large.

I've trimmed the post down although its still a little large, please feel free to edit mod, sorry.

found the list of processors for the mobo...

I'll keep an eye on costs, hope they go down so I can mod this as a bit of fun. New processor and heat sink, RAM, graphics

theres BIOS updates available for the board on MSIs site? are they not valid for my advent/trimgen board?

As I mentioned before, the Trigem version is not the same as the retail version listed at Microstar, The BIOS flash files available may work or the board may refuse to reflash or worse still produce a corrupt BIOS which will make the PC useless.
