Postby Jay12321 » Mon May 16, 2011 2:08 pm

Hey, first i would like to state i know my way around a computer, i fix them for people alot and am training to be a tech. But this comp is driving me crazy.

I have got all drivers working exept for the c-media az-97 audio device, i have downloaded multiple drives and just downloaded the cmedia package. it doesnt seem to matter what one install i can still not get sound. when i try to update it just days it cannot find a better match than the one it has.
in device manager after uninstalling it it automaticly reapperasm and always has a yellow exclamation mark next to it.

How do i get sound on this comp???

Thanks. jay.

Open Device Manager, right click on the sound device with the exclamation mark, click on Properties, open Details tab, Device Instance id.
You should see a string of letters and numbers something like PCI\VEN_1814&DEV_0301. Copy it down and post back here.

PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_7012&SUBSYS_1B101019&REV_A0\3&61AAA01&0&17

Thank you very much for helping me. if you dont mind could you tell me how you use this string and what you use it for. Im trying to learn as much as i can regarding troubleshooting and repairing.

Also ive noticed that whenever i try to uninstall the device from device manager it automaticly reinstalls it straight away. and when i try to uninstall the c-media driver from add/remove programs the comp restarts but then when it comes back on its still there, it wont uninstall!

Thanks, Jay

The string is a unique identity code and the main parts are VEN which is the manufacturer and DEV which is the particular chip or hardware. There are several sites around that list the majority of them eg http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/
The codes are written in hexadecimal so you could find one like 22B8 which is the code for Motorola. Hexadecimal is a 16 bit series from 0 to 9 numerical and A to F alphabetical.
Yours translates as the VEN is Silicon Integrated Systems or SiS and the DEV is audio controller 7012.

AC'97 audio requires two components, a Controller and a Codec. The controller is frequently included in the main system chipset and the Codec is always a separate chip. In your case it looks as though the chipset driver is missing. I would try the one at SiS see if that solves the problem. http://www.sis.com/download/agreement.p ... /download/

my c-media ac97 audio device doesn't work as well. In the device manager it's a yellow ! and a code 10. This happened after I had done a system restore.
