Hello,
I have an Advent 6553 laptop that is just out of warranty and is having some problems.
The laptop powers on but there is no display and after 5-10 seconds it turns off again. The problem can be fixed by removing the battery and CMOS battery and then holding down the power button for 30 seconds.
This is the second time this has happend this month and im looking for a perminant solution rather than a temporary fix. The problem this time seemed to start when i plugged in a USB device, the laptop turned off and then wouldlt boot. I was hoping for a BIOS update or something (currently 1.03) but i cant find one anywhere.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Andy

Have had this problem for a while exact same laptop and exact same problem have changed ram both slots with new ram then changed harddrive and checked for overheating and any obvious defects with the motherboard visually but none of these helped.
I will try your suggestion with removing the battery and hope it works even if i could see the boot up screen for some time i would be very happy
I know this post has not given you any extra help but with more people having the problem the more attention it may get.

Warranties are in addition to your rights under the Sale of Goods Act.
If the notebook is failing after such a short time then it is not fit for purpose.

You can Change the CMOS.CMOS is Nonvolatile BIOS memory refers to a small memory on PC motherboards that is used to store BIOS settings. So IF You have Problem in this Thats Why You Face Same Problem Again and Again.Just change it Your Problem Will Solve.

Had similar problem or a 6552 (New Mar 2009), it would show the on light for around 45sec. before switching off again. Had it in to PC_WORLD and the guy did the reset but only removed the main battery and wanted £225 for a new motherboard.
I tried with both batteries out for the 30 sec. with no joy. I then took them out again along with the small board (which may be memory?) and held the on button for 90 sec. I am now posting this using the Advent without having to pay more the half the cost.
Glad I found this site. GEE TA
