Advent 7104- major sound problem

Postby Aaaargh » Wed Oct 18, 2006 2:08 am

We have just bought a new laptop and we are having a problem regarding the sound. The computer is fine, but when I have just plugged headphones in to listen to something there is a very strange sound coming through, like the sound of something processing or some internal thing inside the laptop happening.

It happens whether or not the master volume is muted, whether or not I close everything down, whether or not there is anything playing, whether or not I use different headphones. The volume does not change in line with the master volume, but stays at the same low level throughout.

It has been suggested to me: a) to look for the newest audio drivers (I have tried looking in the stickied thread but the laptop seems not to have a number consistent with any of those shown), b) to take it back as it's a manufacturer one-off fault, c) to buy a decent quality external soundcard.

Which of these seems most likely? I don't see why it should have this noise coming through; I have used far inferior laptops that have never had this problem, so I am leaning towards (b).

A swift response is appreciated as if I need to take it back I want to do it asap!

Model 7104, EAA-88 <<< That is what's on the back of the laptop

Thanks

Advent 7104 - audio problem

Postby neil1962 » Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:54 pm

Same problem. Same model - Advent 7104 EAA-88. It seems the hard disk is causing the clicking and other sounds as the hard disk led matches almost perfectly the noise coming from the speakers or headphones.

I have tried disabling many devices but if it is the hard disk what can I do?

7104 Audio problem

Postby DaveMX » Tue Oct 31, 2006 10:35 am

I had the same problem with my 7106 - you could hear every device (wireless card, modem, drives kicking in). I tried everything I knew, looked on many websites for guidance and then had a chat with a neighbour who is a sound engineer. Turns out it is due to faulty shielding, and there's nothingyou can do except back up all your stuff, wipe the laptop clean and then return it to wherever you bought it from.

Make sure you take some headphones with you so you can get them to listen, and don't let them fob you off with the suggestion that the headphones are at fault or inadequate! You may have to be persistent - took me 40 mins to get them to finally accept I was right, there was nothing they could do and to arrange a replacement.

Same problem here. Brand new Advent, same model - 7104 - EA88, about a month old. Speakers and headphones produce this problem, and yes I've muted the microphone and checked the audio drivers/codecs.

This is not a software problem. I'm going to wipe mine and return it. DaveMX - sounds like your engineer friend was right.

Thanks to all concerned for the feedback/info - better luck next time!

Yeah, it's just a shielding problem. You get it on PCs also.. Nothing really you can do about it.

advent 7104

Postby marknewman » Tue Mar 13, 2007 9:33 am

Hi,

I've got exactly the same problem with my 7104 and have come to the same conclusion as found here - that there's not much I can do.

I humoured the tech support people over the phone, while they had me spend 45mins doing all the things I'd already tried - but obviously all to no avail.

Now when I go into PC World they say an engineer will come to my house, uplift the laptop for three weeks and replace the sound card.

Personally I don't think this will make any difference. Does anyone here agree? Or, do you think this will work? Surely if the port is badly shielded from other components this wont make the slightest bit of difference…?

Help!

if the mainboard is better shielded, then yes.

I've had an Advent 7104 for ages now and the same problem is still there. The sound is like a beep beep beep beep, long pause, beep beep beep beep, long pause and so forth. Without any earphones plugged in and it's fine.

Could it be that the laptop just is only compatible with pacific ear/headphones?

Guess to avoid the problem is to just put the volume louder on the earphones. The beeping does not get quieter or louder. I tried it on the plane with Halo and it worked reasonably well.

Otherwise, guess you will just have to adapt to it or buy another laptop or PC.

Hi media-man

From the other posts it looks like you are better off without sound on the 7104.

Can I suggest you try here for XP drivers.

ftp://ftp.sabioproducts.com/pub/Noteboo ... 6C_Drivers

If no joy come back and we'll try again.

Spotted this thread after having exactly the same problem with my Advent 7110. Laptop was still under warranty so went through the process that most of you guys have with drivers, software etc etc. In the end took it back and insisted it was checked by engineer. Fault was confirmed by PC World technician in store. Took laptop home and arrangements made to collect from home. Laptop and Power supply was collected on due date, packed by courier and returned 1 week later - All fixed!
Service sheet hard to read but looks like 'capacitor to motherboard replaced.

Full marks to PC World!

Hope this reassures you that this fault is curable, sorry its not fully detailled.

Good Luck

*** THE SOLUTION IS HERE !!! ***
My Eureka moment.
You underestimate the cleverness and kind thinking of the Advent Software Geeks.
I had the same problem and just solved it.

All the device drivers and software items are hidden in a not so secret folder and can be reinstated without a full restore as follows:

Start->My Computer->2 clicks on C: drive->2 clicks on Application Folder->2 clicks on Driver Folder

You will now see folders for each and every device including Sound

Open the folder and click on Setup.exe or Install.exe as relevant and the problem is miraculously solved.

No need to go bananas hunting for driver updates etc.

Incidentally to recover missing appz instead of the Driver Folder open the Tool Folder.

It's all to be found in the misleadingly titled Advent Recovery Guide pdf file which is on your PC just search for
Advent_Recovery_Guide or something similar and read page 4.

Now you can all send me love and kisses at zen_glaps@hotmail.com
and a letter of apology to Dixons/PC World !
