Advent Battery Recall

Postby grendel » Tue Sep 29, 2009 7:22 pm

I got a letter today, from Advent informing me of a recall on the batteries of some advent batteries.
The models affected are the
K4000
K6000
KC500-B
KC500-R
KC500-P
9115
9117
9215
9315
9517
9617
EI system 1201
EI System 4113
EI System 4115C
EI System 4213

You have to check on their site once you get the letter at www.checkmybattery.com
and you will need your laptop serial number and the battery serial number
I checked mine and its fine, but the daughters boyfriend who has the same model has one of the recall batteries.
This must be a first for Advent- a product recall!

I got the same letter. Maybe they'll do something about the noise and smoke my 9517 has been emitting... A replacement battery may fix it, but I'll be interested in the eventual outcome. PC World didn't want to know...

usually near the battery on the bottom of the laptop is what appears to be a slide switch, slide it to one side and pull the battery straight towards the back of the laptop and it should come out.

I got the letter - got the battery out of my 9117 and found out that it was subject to the recall. One word of caution - they stress several times on the website that you must enter it correctly - and they mean it! The little label isn't the easiest to read - it took 4 attempts of trying "1" or "I" and "0" or "O" before I got the right serial number. Mine has "II" (the letter I twice) in the middle of the serial number - which looks like "11" (the number 11) when reading it. You can keep going back and trying again until you've exhausted the combinations though if you think you've made a mistake.

I received a letter couple of weeks ago, strange how no comp magazines have picked up on this and it's taken a long time to find the fault, hope the discovery method wasn't too drastic. Luckily my laptop isn't on the list, and I wasn't going near their site until I had more info, but going by some of the comments here it seems to be ok.

I think that my battery should be also eligible for the recall but I don't have my customer number any more and therefore can't check if I'm correct. My computer is a El-System 1201. Is there a way to contact Advent and ask them for a new one?

I dont think it was every battery in all of the models, my model was subject to the recall too, but my battery wasn't one of the affected ones, I think it may be the earlier ones, just because yours doesn't have the battery that's subject to the recall doesn't mean its refurbished.

They are a bit slow replying to email.
You could try phoning on 0844 800 6020 (calls cost 5p per minute from a BT landline)

I am not sure, they might send a second letter, I got one telling me I had entered my serial number wrong, so I had to check again, (I still have a good battery) there is also a check on the site now that checks you have entered two I's (Thats Eyes not ones) in the first part of the serial number, so that was obviously a common error.

Hi,

I have got the same letter. Then went to https://www.checkmybattery.com website and tried to enter customer reference number and postcode. However website says my post code is invalid. I live in Dublin 15 in Ireland. What should I provide as my postcode? I have tried 'Dublin15', '15' and 'Dub15'. All in vain.

Thanks!
